Overcoming the Plateau

Overcoming the Plateau

You may notice as you move closer to your weight loss goals that you hit a plateau or two where it is feels like you can’t lose any more weight. Realize that this is a very common obstacle that many individuals working to lose weight face during their journey. Understanding what causes a weight loss plateau and how to tackle it is the best way to get over the hump.

Why Have I Hit a Plateau?

The more weight we lose, the slower the extra weight comes off. When you begin losing weight, you might notice how easy it is to drop at least a pound a week. It seems like you are right on track to getting to your goal earlier than you thought, then you suddenly hit a road block. The closer you get to your ideal weight, the more difficult it is to lose weight on a weekly basis. At some point, your body adjusts to your regular weight loss program. This is when your plateau will be most noticeable. Be assured, there are steps you can take to overcome the plateau and move on towards your weight loss goal.

What Can I Do?

Generally, the most important thing you need to do during a weight loss plateau is adjust your caloric intake. As your metabolism drops throughout your weight loss, your body will need less calories. If you are staying consistent with the number of calories you are taking in, this will need to be adjusted as you weigh less. Assess the quality of your food. Are you eating enough fiber and lean protein? Add more vegetables, beans, and high fiber fruit to your diet. Beware of snacking. A little bit here and there can lead to weight gain or even the inability to lose. Remember, weight is lost when you are balancing calories in and calories out.

Change up your workout routine. Following the same routine for a long period will leave your body immune to your workout. Speed up your work out, use a different machine, or focus on a different body part to help your body burn more fat. Boot camps are a great option, as well as alternating walking and running. Asses your sleep. Has something been keeping you from getting the right amount of sleep? Be sure you are hydrating and taking in the proper amount of fluids. If none of this works, try to add extra activity to your routine. Your body might be at a point where your fitness level is increased and it needs a significant change.

Whatever you do, don’t give up. Everyone hits the weight loss plateau. Find ways to get over the hump and you will be back on the road to achieving your weight loss goals. If you are still struggling, try our weight loss plateau patient instructions for another approach.
